It's nighttime and a woman is running down a dark alley apparently running from someone. She suddenly runs into a vampire. He drains her of her blood and carves the symbol of the cross into her left cheek with his pointed ring. We suddenly see Angel's face transform from the demon visage to the human one. Angel suddenly wakes up in bed, breathing heavily. Kate's police squad arrive on the scene and locate the dead girl with the cross carved in her cheek. The next day at the office, Wesley shows up with their mail but it's the neighbours and before he heads back out to hand it to them he becomes speechless and then quickly exits the office. Angel comes up form his apartment and acts completely grumpy and snappish with Cordelia. He heads out to the police station and asks Kate to run a favor, something to do with the DMV. Kate lets him in on the newest case, which she's completely frustrated about because there aren't any links between the victims. Angel glances at the crime scene photos and recognizes the girl from his dream. He becomes quiet and leaves suddenly. Later, Kate briefs some of the force on the killer and most of the comments she makes ironically pertain to Angel. Cordelia is closing the office up for the night when Wesley bursts in and shows her the newspaper clipping of the dead girl and tells her that this was how Angel (when he was Angelus) used to kill his victims; by carving a cross into his victim's cheek. Cordelia listens to his story and then tells him to get out and that he's not allowed to acuse Angel like this. Angel steps out of the shadows and says that Wesley is right, at least partly. Angel tells them of his dream in which he killed the victims. Cordelia and Wesley then decide to lock Angel to his bed for the night to see if it is actually him sleepwalking and killing these people. Cordelia heads home while Wesley stays to watch over Angel. We cut to a scene someplace back in the 1700s, Angel has killed another woman and inscribes the cross on her cheek. The next morning Cordelia comes in with the morning paper that states that there has been another murder and Angel couldn't have done it because he was locked up. Angel then explains to them that he did do it, in a round about way. In the 1700s, he created a vampire by the name of Penn and now Penn is recreating he first few crimes when Angel taught him how to kill.
In an apartment somewhere, a blond handsome man (Penn) posts up a pictures and articles from the newspaper onto his walls. Back at Angel's, Cordelia and Wesley unlock Angel and he tells them that he sired Penn. Angel decides to alert Kate about the circumstances despite Wesley's protests. At the police station, Angel asks to speak to Kate alone. They go to a private room and Angel asks her if she trusts him, she says yes and he hands her a drawing of the Penn's face and tells her that the next victim will be a blond male teen. Angel goes back to his car, carrying a radio that he took from a cop car, this way if the police find anything, Angel will know about it right away. Kate alerts her crew and they set out.
That night, a young blond male is trying to bum beer off strangers when he asks Penn. A cop spots Penn and calls it in. Penn leads the teen to a back allery, using the excuse of discount beer. Penn begins to bite the teen but drops him when the police show up. He makes a run for it and jumps through a window into an abandoned house. Kate shows up and heads into the house. Angel and Wesley arrive as well and Angel heads into the house. The house is pitch dark. Kate spots the killer and fires thee shots at hime. He surprises her but not being affected by the shots and throws her across the room, injuring her. Just then Angel drops down from the ceiling. Penn recognizes Angel and after finding out that he has a soul they get into a violent fight. Penn makes him escape after throwing Angel into Kate. A few minutes later, Kate's back-up has arrived and they're searching the place. Kate knows that Angel isa vampire but refuses to believe it. Angel tells her that she's going to have to come to terms with it in order to capture and kill Penn. The next day Penn visits Angel's office and Cordelia ends up giving him more info than she should have, like Kate's name. She finally realizes he's the murderer and opens the blinds, letting the sunlight pour onto her and cast rays on the floor. Angel comes up from his apartment and Cordelia hands him a stake. Angel calls Penn a hack and he's just doing this for revenge against his long-dead father. Penn escapes after telling Angel that he's officially changing his style. That night Angel visits Kate and finds her studying vampires. Shes done an incredible amount of research and she knows everything about Angel and his past. She refuses to let him in and tells him she won't hesitate to kill him as well as Penn. Angel locates Penn's apartment and he and Wesley head there. Angel finds pictures of a school bus and children but he figures out that Penn was just trying to mislead him and his actual target is going to be Kate. Kate is briefing her squad when Penn steps out from the shadows, fights off the other cops and grabs Kate and takes her into the sewers. Angel finds them and gets into a vicious fight with Penn while Kate watches on. Penn finalley gets Angel into a head lock, using Angel's body as a shield from Kate. Kate picks up a huge plank of wood with a sharp end. She shoves the sharp end through Angel's stomach and up into Penn's heart. Pen is dusted and Kate wrenches the piece of wood out of Angel's gut. Angel collapses, breathing heavily. She missed Angel's heart. On purpose.
That night, Angel is sitting on the rooftop and Cordelia comes out and hands him a piece of paper with info from her latest vision. Cordelia tries to console him about his dreams and that he has changed. Cordelia then promises to kill him dead if he ever goes bad.

I absolutely loved this episode. I couldn't have thought up a better episode in which Kate finds out about Angel's demonic side. I loved the entire dark gloomy atmosphere around this episode. I loved the settings, I loved the acting. I pretty much loved it. I'm really glad that they brought back some of Angel's past (these may be my raging teenage hormones but I though Penn was incredibly attractive) and as long as they look as good as Penn, they can keep on bringing back people from Angel's past! Anyway, Penn was great as Angel's ancient side kick. I liked seeing him trying to replicate the ancient killings he'd done. Angel's fight with Penn was great as well. It was nice to see a full-on vampire fight. Things were flying! Awesome to see the strength that vampires are supposed to have! The scene where Angel visits Kate at her apartment and she doesn't let him in is great, even though I find it a little annoying now because every time Angel tells someone who he is we have to go through the entire scenes where they figure it out and then realize that he's still good. Anyway, Kate's reaction was apropriate and the ending scene was excellent. Especially when she missed Angel on purpose. Excellent kill by Detective Lockley. And now we can only wait to see what will happen...

My first reaction to this episode was 'Wesley? NOOOOOOOOOOO!' THIS is who they've replaced Doyle with? No way! Wesley is a giant dweeb. I don't find him amusing ,actually, I find him extremely annoying! But I suppose I must get used to it and quiet my complains with mighty god Whedon even though I REALLY HATE WESLEY. There. Yes, I'm done, sorry. Anyways, after my shock and horror as seeing Wesley as a part of the <choke> cast subsided, I discovered that Angelus always picked really hot people to turn, except it would have helped to get rid of this guy's skanky goatee. The dreams were disturbing enough without being graphic which was really cool since nowadays it seems the more gore, the better. I had a problem with one dream, the one set in ye olden days, when the girl is running to the door for help, she passes at least five people on the street? Hello, damsel in distress, why don't you ask for help? And did anyone else think Angel's picture didn't look anything like that vampire? I thought he was supposed to be a good artist! One last interesting thing..... In the newspaper clippings on the wall, one of them says "Pope slays 4th victim"..... interesting choice of words.......
